The Natural Park of Monfragüe is the greatest environmental treasure of Extremadura, and has been declared Biosphere Reserve.
Monfragüe is a real explosion of the natural richness of Extremadura which constitutes a perfect exponent of the Mediterranean vegetation and fauna, not only by its denseness but also by the variety and rarity of the species that dwell in it. With a surface of 17.852 hectares, the territory has been populated since prehistory and the Romans were the ones who designated the name of Monsfragorum (Impenetrable Mountain), as allusion to its exuberance. The Tajo river and its affluent, the Tiétar river meander through its spots and sculpt great rocky outcrops where amazing colonies of “buitre leonado” (gyps Fulvus) settle, peregrine falcons, eagle owls, while its banks and riverbeds are the natural habitat of the “martín pescador” Kingfisher, blackbird or cormorant (phalacrocorax)
